SAFE DISPOSAL OF UNREGISTERED BALED DIAPERS

In a move to curb the influx of unapproved baby care products on the Ghanaian market, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has supervised the safe disposal of 151 bales of unregistered baby diapers at Vigour DW Enterprise in Ashaiman.

The exercise, which took place from February 24 to 26, 2026, forms part of the Authority’s proactive measures to strengthen regulatory oversight and ensure that only approved products reach consumers. The diapers had earlier been intercepted at the Tema Port during routine checks, after which they were confiscated and kept in a state warehouse before the final disposal.

The FDA has expressed concern over the growing presence of baled diapers on the market, noting that such products pose significant safety risks. Due to poor handling of these diapers, they may be exposed to moisture, dust and pests during storage, creating conditions that support the growth of bacteria and fungi and thus rendering it unsafe for use.

Additionally, prolonged storage under such conditions may cause material degradation or chemical changes, raising further concerns about their safety. Unlike registered products, which are subject to strict quality and hygiene standards, baled diapers may expose infants to skin irritation, infections and other health risks due to possible contamination and the presence of harmful substances.

The disposal exercise was carried out in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Port Health, the Bureau of National Investigations, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, National Security and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) Security.

The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and urged importers and distributors to comply with regulatory requirements to ensure the safety and well-being of consumers, particularly infants.
