As part of ongoing efforts to combat the circulation of counterfeit cosmetic products, the Medical Devices, Cosmetics, and Household Chemicals Enforcement Department conducted a targeted raid and swoop operation at Madina Market on 11th February 2026. The exercise was initiated following a consumer complaint received through the FDA portal from the Market Authorization Holders of ORS Olive Oil Sheen Spray.
The operation aimed to verify the presence and distribution of counterfeit ORS Olive Oil Sheen Spray products and to remove such items from the market. A total of fourteen retail outlets within the cosmetics lane were inspected during the exercise.
Findings from the operation confirmed widespread availability of counterfeit products, with all shops visited displaying the items for sale. Retailers indicated that the products were sourced from various suppliers; however, none were able to provide proof of purchase at the time of inspection, raising concerns about traceability and supply chain integrity.
As part of enforcement actions, a total of 643 pieces of counterfeit ORS Olive Oil Sheen Spray were seized across multiple product sizes. These items were removed from circulation due to concerns regarding their authenticity, labeling, and potential safety risks to consumers.
The raid was considered successful, as it achieved its primary objective of identifying and retrieving counterfeit products from the market. Following the operation, affected retailers were directed to report to the FDA office in Tema to assist with further investigations aimed at identifying the sources of these products.
Beyond the immediate enforcement outcomes, the operation highlighted the persistent challenge of counterfeit cosmetics within informal market settings. It also reinforced the need for sustained surveillance, stronger enforcement measures, and improved collaboration with stakeholders to enhance product traceability.
Through continued vigilance and enforcement, the Department is working to build a safer, more reliable cosmetic market for all.
