About Us

Welcome to the official FDA Ghana Partnerships and International Collaborations page, where we celebrate collaborative efforts and partnerships that protect public health and safety.

The FDA has been instrumental in facilitating training for over 221 regulators and researchers from 16 countries, strengthening regulatory systems in numerous National Regulatory Agencies (NRAs) through tailored programs and study tours. Through strategic partnerships with six (6) NRAs and ongoing engagements with five others, including El Salvador and Madagascar, FDA Ghana is actively promoting public health and safety on the African continent.

Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, CEO of FDA Ghana, was recently awarded Africa’s Medical Products Regulation Achievers Award, underscoring the Authority’s dedication to becoming a global leader in regulatory excellence and fostering collaborations across the African continent. This recognition not only celebrates her dedication but also positions the Authority as a formidable leader on the continent.

Furthermore, our collaborations extend beyond NRAs to encompass industry stakeholders, research institutions, and academia. These partnerships focus on enhancing regulatory processes and standards, strengthening capacity among regulatory professionals, and promoting innovation in product development and manufacturing. By working closely with diverse stakeholders, we aim to ensure the safety, quality, and efficacy of a wide range of products, including medicines, medical devices, food, cosmetics, and more.

Our Mission

The FDA exists to assure the safety, quality and efficacy of human and veterinary drugs, food, biological products, cosmetics, medical devices, household chemical substances and clinical trials, and the control and use of tobacco products, through the enforcement of relevant standards to protect public health.

Our partnerships cover a wide range of areas, including:

  • Regulatory Excellence: Collaborating to enhance regulatory processes and standards for the delivery of high-quality products to consumers.
  • Capacity Strengthening: Strengthening capacity of regulatory professionals, industry stakeholders, and the public to navigate and comply with regulatory requirements.

Strengthening Regulatory Systems

Through strategic partnerships and international collaborations, the FDA Ghana has played a pivotal role in strengthening regulatory systems across Africa. By providing training, technical assistance, and capacity-building initiatives, we have empowered regulatory agencies in over sixteen countries, including The Gambia, Senegal, Gabon, Guinea, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Mozambique, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Eswatini, and Botswana. Our efforts have contributed to enhancing regulatory capabilities and promoting harmonization of standards and practices.

Collaborative Projects and Initiatives

Our collaborative projects and initiatives have resulted in tangible improvements in regulatory processes and public health outcomes. From facilitating study tours and training programs to implementing innovative regulatory solutions, we have made significant strides in advancing regulatory science and strengthening health systems. Partnerships with organizations such as USAID, GIZ, WHO, EU, CDC, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) have been instrumental in achieving our shared goals.

Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)

The FDA Ghana has signed several MOUs with partner organizations, fostering closer collaboration and resource sharing. These agreements enable us to leverage expertise, technology, and resources to address common challenges and seize opportunities for mutual benefit. Our partnerships with entities such as Egypt Drug Authority (EDA), Fidelity Bank, El Salvador, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, Touro University, and Market Access Africa demonstrate our commitment to building sustainable partnerships for regulatory excellence.

Funding and Project Management

Securing funding for various projects and programs reflects our commitment to effective project management and efficient resource utilisation. Through prudent financial management and strategic partnerships, we have implemented initiatives ranging from laboratory upgrades and capacity-building programs to equipment procurement and regulatory reforms. Our partnerships with United States Agency for International Development (USAID), United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Promoting the Quality of Medicines Plus (PQM+), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Union (EU), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) have been crucial in supporting these endeavours.

Innovations and Best Practices

At FDA Ghana, we drive innovation and adopt best practices to enhance regulatory efficiency. Our harmonization efforts with the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) exemplify this commitment. Initially, operational overlaps persisted, leading to conflicts and burdens on businesses. However, through an MOU signed on June 13, 2022, we’ve streamlined processes. Now, businesses can register products at the FDA and optionally obtain GSA certification, streamlining the process. This collaborative effort enhances efficiency, reduces duplication, and benefits businesses and consumers alike.

Celebrating Our Achievements

As we celebrate our achievements and successes, we remain committed to our mission of safeguarding public health through regulatory excellence. The dedication and expertise of our team, combined with the support of our partners and stakeholders, propel us forward in our pursuit of a safer and healthier future for all. Together, we will continue to make a meaningful impact in advancing public health and safety across Africa and beyond.
