Dear Stakeholders,
As I reflect on my first six months at the helm of the Food and Drugs Authority, I am filled with gratitude and cautious optimism about the road ahead.
I begin by extending warm seasonal greetings to all our stakeholders. This past year has been a mixed bag; we acknowledge the challenges that exist, and we have carefully collated all concerns raised. However, today I choose to focus on the remarkable progress we have made, driven by the dedication of our hardworking staff. I particularly congratulate our retirees for their years of distinguished service.
Our strategic direction rests on four pillars: customer-centricity, world-class facilities, empowered employees, and alignment with the national 24-Hour Economy initiative.
Customer-Centricity
We have introduced the G-FIRMS, developed comprehensive client service training modules, and are redesigning our reception areas to create more convenient client handling spaces. Our partnership with the Ghana Enterprises Agency extends our reach, while our expansion into four additional regions and 31 districts brings services closer to the people. We are streamlining work processes and repositioning our image around a core principle: regulation with a human touch.
World-Class Facilities
We successfully defended our Maturity Level 3 status and are working toward WHO-listed facility designation. Building on our status as a WHO Centre of Regulatory Excellence, we continue to train regulators across Africa. Plans for our new head office are underway, and we are aligning our organizational structure with WHO requirements while deepening collaboration with development partners.
Empowered Employees
Our commitment to staff development is demonstrated through expanded training opportunities and increased international exposure. We are migrating from the Single Spine salary structure, while implementing health insurance and provident fund schemes. Allowances are under review, study leave policies are being revised, and collective bargaining negotiations continue in earnest.
24-Hour Economy Integration
We have engaged actively with the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat and are embedding these principles into our operations. Pilot shift systems are being introduced where they add value and ensure sustainability.
Infrastructure and Logistics
Construction is ongoing for our ISO 5 Clean Room, with proposed developments for microbiology and molecular biology laboratories, a training hub, and improved regional offices. We are addressing challenges at our 11 border posts, optimizing the Tema Heights facility, and planning storage solutions for food samples. Internet connectivity improvements, head office painting, and equipment procurement – including IT infrastructure, furniture, and vehicles – are all in progress.
As we close this chapter and look toward the new year, I am confident that the Food and Drugs Authority is on a path toward excellence. With continued commitment from our team and support from our stakeholders, we will fulfill our mandate of safeguarding public health with professionalism and compassion.
Thank you for your trust and partnership.
