FDA HOLDS CLEAN-UP EXERCISE AND MARKET DURBAR AT THE AGBOGBLOSHIE MARKET

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has organised a clean-up exercise and a market durbar at the Agbogboloshi market, as part of the activities commemorating this year’s Food Safety Sensitization Programme.

The clean-up exercise and market durbar brought together officers of the Metropolitan Assembly, Market Queens, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Environmental Health Officers among other stakeholders, to clean up the market and to hold discussions on how to keep the market clean and ensure safe food for consumers.

These activities were intended to sensitize the various stakeholders and to raise concerns that borders on public health and safety. The market durbar was also to help gather the relevant information needed to develop interventions that would be used to ensure and promote the sale of safe food to consumers.

Mrs. Delese A. A. Darko, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, in her welcome address, mentioned that some activities at our market places serve as a source of food contamination which compromises food safety and public health. Some of these food safety challenges she mentioned included exposure of produce to unfavorable storage conditions, poor hygienic practices and conditions in our markets as well as food adulteration or food fraud. These challenges were noted to be threats to food security and food safety in Ghana. She therefore advised that it was the responsibility of all stakeholders to curtail these unsafe practices.

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Food Inspectorate Division at the FDA, Mrs. Isabella Mansa Agra, on her part reminded the stakeholders that the clean-up exercise and market durbar were organised to ensure that the market are clean and food produce being sold are safe for use. She further indicated that the FDA would continue to collaborate with all other stakeholders to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the various markets.

The Assembly Man for the area who was also present thanked the FDA and the Zoomlion Ghana Limited for the initiative and gave assurance that they would work with the Municipal Assembly and the environmental officers to ensure a consistent clean market.

It would be recalled that the FDA on Tuesday, 24 October, 2017, organised the 1st Food Safety Conference under the theme, “Enhancing Food Security through Safe Food Practices” as part of the activities commemorating the Food Safety Sensitization Programme 2017. The last activity outlined for the program is a “What Do You Know” Quiz Competition scheduled for Sunday, October 29, 2017 among some selected second cycle institutions.
