True to its promise to fight and control the abuse of Tramadol in the Country, the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) office in the Brong Ahafo Region has organized a sensitization programme for the Chiraa Senior High School (SHS) in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Speaking to the students, the Brong Ahafo Regional Head of the FDA office, Mr. Mathew Gyan-Nkum explained to the students that Tramadol is a prescription-only-medicine (POM) a man-made (synthetic) narcotic pain reliever (analgesic) that is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Tramadol works on the nervous system and brain to reduce the feeling of pain.

He further explained to the students that it has come to the attention of the FDA that the abuse of Tramadol hydrochloride and codeine in cough syrups has significantly increased in the country, a situation that is of great concern to the FDA.

The proliferation and abuse of Tramadol which are usually in higher doses (120mg, 200mg, 225mg and 250mg) has now become a major national concern and the FDA is resolved within its mandate to ensure an eventual eradication of this menace which has a wide reaching negative effect on public health.  He therefore advised the students on the need to desist from this dangerous practice.

The Assistant Headmaster in charge of Domestic activiyies thanked the FDA on behalf of the school and the students. He also said he was very happy the FDA had taken the time to come and educate the children and appealed to the FDA to do this regularly so the students would eschew this bad practice. He urged the students to carry the message home to their siblings, friends and families in a bid to educate them and curtail the menace which has a harmful and dangerous effect on their health.

From Chiraa SHS, the team moved on to Odumaseman SHS also in the same region to carry out further sensitization programme for the students there as well.
